Power of the Swarm The Zergling is one of the most versatile units in the game.
It is also one of the few combat units that can make an impact in the late game as well as in the early game. Put differently, they are the primary Zerg unit, but they also receive awesome upgrades as one climbs the tech tree.
The Zergling is versatile enough that it doesn't need a specific strategy. Often if a player is low on gas he will morph a few Zerglings, just because they are cheap, low maintenance, easy to use
and don't cost valuable gas.
Get the Zerg melee attack upgrades and both Zergling upgrades at the Spawning Pool. (speed and attack rate) These are invaluable. It is well worth spending the gas. Zerglings morph quickly enough that you can build some and use them to defend your base in emergencies.
Rushing Probably the most common Zergling strategy is the rush. A rush is when a player abandons normal economic development and instead spends his time and money on
gathering an effective military force before his opponent. The specifics of executing a Zergling rush are covered in the Zerg
Strategy article. Properly executed, a Zergling rush will win the game for a player, albeit cheaply, because it can catch a player before he has any defenses at all. In fact, it is not uncommon to see a player defending against a Zergling rush using his worker units.
Cracklings The basic philosophy of the crackling strategy is different from all other strategies. (except perhaps the Hydralisk swarm)
The objective is not a certain number of units, like 12 Carriers or 24 Zealots and 12 Dragoons. Instead, cracklings is about the rate at which you produce Zerglings, not how many you have. The goal is to produce them faster than your opponent destroys them provided that you are constantly attacking him. This is most easily accomplished on BGH (Big Game Hunters), but applies to other, resource rich, maps as well.
I once played against a Terran on BGH who turtled himself in. (Lot's of Bunkers, Marines and Siege Tanks)
He, however, failed to expand to other sites, and I proceeded to dominate the map. Having expanded to 5 separate resource nodes, I got around 20 Hatcheries (this was an excessive and extreme case) and began to outpour Zerglings. I would send each group attack-moving straight into his defenses as they spawned. While 99% of the Zerglings died in vain, sometimes they would get through dead their 8 points of damage and then die. Also, the Zerglings would often get close enough that the enemy siege tanks would damage the bunkers. Eventually his defenses succumbed, and Zerglings poured into his base. Fear the power of the Swarm.
Notes Zerglings demolish buildings rather quickly when they aren't getting killed. Research burrow, and use Zerglings to keep tabs on unoccupied resource nodes.
Useful as cheap scouts. Just 8 in an Overlord can devastate unguarded resource collection. Always attack when you've produced enough Zerglings to completely swamp and surround your opponent's
defenses and units. Any more and you're waiting too long to attack. Two cool lines to use with Zerglings are 'Gooey!' when you munching Terran infantry and 'I grow weary of the slaughter' after a
large battle.
