Queen and Defiler

Table of Contents

Oooohh, a Zerg spellcaster!
The Queen has one use and one advantage that many actually warrant giving it the description of mediocre. The one use, parasite.  The one advantage, it sucks.  Let me explain: the Queen is thought, by many, to suck.  Very few people ever use it.  This is a good thing, however, because if you decide to use it you can catch your enemies off guard.  If you sneak a Queen by a enemy's resource collectors and cast Parasite, odds are they won't notice for a long time.  This can be used as a very effective form of zerg scouting and information gathering. However, if anyone uses the Queen for Ensnare, Spawn Broodlings, or Infest Command Center, they are wasthing their time. Here's why: Ensnare just isn't effective, Infested Terrans aren't worth the cash, and Spawn Broodlings, while effective, only destroys one unit. I'd rather have three or four Hydras for the cost of a queen, and 2 or 3 more for the cost of the upgrades and technology.

Queen Notes
Use parasite on resource collectors
Don't get more than one or two Queens, it's just not needed
Unless you really want to, avoid the Queen altogether

Hey, it's Another Zerg spellcaster...
The Defiler is not all it's cracked up to be.  It represents a large consumption of time, research, micromanagement and resources. Defilers have two priamry spells, dark swarm and plague.  Dark swarm covers a large area in an orange cloud.  Ranged attacks cannot damage units inside the cloud. Plague contaminates several units in a small area, and those units lose hp at a good pace, but never dropping below 1. It does, however, make it's targets very vulnerable to attack, as any further damage will destroy them.  Over the course of it's duration, plague will reduce all but the strongest units to 1 hp.  Note that it does not effect shields.  Lastly, the defiler has the ability to consume your own units and convert them into energy for casting spells. This is useful, as a couple of sacrificed zerglings will totally recharge a defiler.

Unfortunately, in the end the defiler does not add up. It is way too high on the tech tree to merit its acquisition, and it requires a large investment in resources just to research it's spells.  Further, the defiler has very few hp, and will usually be spotted and killed by the enemy before it can be truly useful.

It is unfortunate that some of the most interesting units in Starcraft, the spellcasters, are also some of the most ineffective.
