Aerial Control The Mutalisk (or 'Muta' for short) is an incredibly versatile unit that is about halfway up the tech tree.
(versatility is a common theme in Zerg units) It costs 100 minerals, 100 gas and 2 supply. Muta rushes are quite common because only a Lair is necessary. After upgrading a Spire to a Greater Spire one can morph Mutalisks into either Guardians or Devourers, devastating anti-ground and anti-air units respectively. Devourers are rather specialized, but the Guardian is a game ender. Its awesome firepower make it hard to even get near unless you have air units or spells. Guardians, as well as Mutalisks, are like deer. Where there is one, there are usually many.
The Muta has numerous strategies, ranging from the Muta rush (in which a player gets about 6 mutas an attack an opponents resourcers) to the Muta swarm in which you simply overpower your opponent's
anti-air defenses. The trick to using Mutas effectively in combat lies in their speed and ability to get in behind your opponent. They make excellent hit-and-run units.
Swooping in to destroy or incapacitate an enemy expansion and they leaving once reinforcements arrive. In games with large teams, one player can often take the same group of Mutas, eliminate one opponent's resourcers, and then immediately pull the mutas out and attack another opponent in the same fashion, and then another ....
Combined Forces One common combination is to use Guardians and Zerglings. The Zerglings keep the enemy units occupied while the Guardians really deliver the hurt.
A small group of Mutas will cover anti-air and act as a fast-reaction group, picking off enemies or serving as a distraction. This is one of the most entertaining ways to destroy an opponent with the Zerg, because it allows you to use a diversified attack force and is highly cost-effective.
Beasts of the Sky Devourers are one of the new units in Brood War that is exclusively anti-air. The Devourer does not do all that much damage, and has a horribly
slow rate of fire. However, it's attack does have the nasty side effect of implanting it's target with spores that slow down it's rate of fire, and cause it to take more damage from attacks.
In general, I do not reccomend the use of devourers. They seem like an perfect anit-large cap ship unit, but masses of hydralisks already work perfectly in that role and are not so specialized.
