Rushing

Table of Contents

To Rush or Not to Rush
The Zerg player has to decide before the game if he will rush his opponent.  If he does, then the best build order is as follows.

Build Drone (assign to crystal)
Let the 5 drones mine until you have 150 minerals
Build Spawning pool
Build Drone (assign to crystal)

Wait for the spawning pool to finish, and when it does you should have 3 larva and 150 minerals. Turn these into 6 zerglings the instant the pool completes.  Use these to attack.

Since it is possible to acquire zerglings so quickly with this build order, you can attack your opponent when he has little or no defense.  Poor players will often quit from the rush, but better players will use their workers to fend off your zerglings.  It is important to continue producing zerglings while the first ones fight, because only the worst players will succumb to 6 zerglings.  If you don't destroy him on the first attack the second or third waves should.  This strategy is best used on small maps such as Blood Bath or Challenger where you can either find your opponent quickly or you know exactly where he is from the beginning.

There are two things to remember about this strategy: if your opponent realizes that you are rushing and quits before the two minute mark the game is a draw and you don't win.  Second, if your follow up attacks fail, then you should immediately resume expanding your economy.  It is possible to catch up if you have harrased your opponent enough.  Don't hesitate to expand to another site quickly.

Cheap Tactic?

Rushing with zerglings is more likley to get someone pissed at you than any other Starcraft strategy.
