We would like to expound on a theory of ours. We believe that there are 2 types of units in all RTS games. First are those units that have an impact on almost every game, are useful in many
situations, and generally pay for themselves by the time they are destroyed. The second is those units that are cool, fun, funky, and weird, but, when you boil it all down, they are not
necessary. The first will henceforth be known as beef. The second type shall be beans. Let us give an example: in Starcraft, the hydralisk is an example of beef. It is very useful,
effective, and is an all around cost-efficient unit. (Cost-efficiency is a very powerful term, and it is important to realize that it indicates not only resource-efficiency but time efficiency. Units that require lots of micromanagement, such as spellcasters, are not time efficient, unless their spells are sufficiently powerful.) The defiler, on the other hand, is beans, because they are expensive, require a lot a specialized research, are high on the tech tree, and management-intensive (meaning they require a lot of your time). Yes, perhaps a well-placed dark swarm could turn the tides of the battle. But the sheer amount of micro management time, resources, and energy it takes to get one of those things active makes it much less attractive than, lets say, 6 more hydralisks. The problem lies in the fact that the worst beans are often some of the coolest units in a game, while the beef is usually the more common unit. Stick with the beef and don't stray into the beans. Learn to recognize which units are beans in a given game, and avoid them.
